Sweet potato is a slow starter and a fast finisher. It cannot compete with weeds in its first weeks, but once its canopy closes, weeds barely matter. All the weed pressure β and nearly all the yield loss β is concentrated in the first six weeks. Manage that window and you manage weeds.

Why the first six weeks matter so much

- Mound systems: weed the mound surface and between mounds; avoid mounding soil up onto young stems.
Pro tip: never let weeds seed
Weeds that escape to flower and seed multiply next season's problem tenfold. Even when it feels late, cutting or uprooting flowering weeds before seed set β even once, roughly β is one of the cheapest investments in next year's field. Mulching
Mulch is sweet potato's best friend. A layer of dry grass, straw, leaves, or crop residue over the row:

- Post-emergence options are few and easy to misuse; rate and timing must follow the label exactly.
- Never spray onto young sweet potato foliage with products not registered for the crop β injury is common.
