Fungi, viruses, and bacteria
Sweet potato's disease list is short, but the damage is not: the viral disease complex alone can cut yields in half or more. Most disease problems share one root cause β infected planting material β and one fix: start clean and stay clean. Understand the big four groups and you can manage nearly everything.

Viral diseases: SPVD and friends
Viruses are the biggest disease problem in sweet potato worldwide because they build up silently in vegetatively propagated vines. The key players:
- SPFMV (feathery mottle virus) β the most widespread; usually mild alone.
- SPCSV (chlorotic stunt virus) β mild alone, but its role is outsized (below).
- SPVD (Sweet Potato Virus Disease) β the devastating combination: when SPFMV and SPCSV infect the same plant, they interact synergistically and symptoms explode β severe stunting, distorted yellow mosaic leaves, and yield losses of 50β90%. In many regions SPVD is the single most damaging disease of the crop.
Viruses are spread by aphids and whiteflies and, above all, by planting infected cuttings. There is no cure β only prevention.
Watch out: the silent build-up
Virus symptoms can be invisible on a mild single infection β farmers keep planting βfine-lookingβ vines that are quietly carrying virus. Yield declines year after year without anyone seeing why. The only reliable answers are certified/clean material (see Clean Seed & Planting Material Systems), strict roguing of suspicious plants, and controlling the aphid and whitefly vectors.

Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia)
Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) is the crop's most destructive bacterial disease in warm, wet regions β and one of the hardest to manage because the bacterium persists in soil and water for years. Symptoms: sudden wilting and yellowing of vines, darkened vascular tissue inside stems, and root rot. Control is almost entirely preventive:
- Plant only healthy cuttings β the disease travels in infected vines.
- Long rotation away from sweet potato and other susceptible hosts (tomato, pepper, potato, eggplant β see Rotation).
- Rogue and remove infected plants immediately; do not compost them.
- Clean tools and avoid moving soil or water from infected fields.
- Resistant varieties exist and are the practical answer where the disease is endemic β ask your extension service.
Storage rots
Most βdiseasesβ farmers discover are actually storage rots β fungi and bacteria that enter through harvest wounds and spread under poor storage conditions. They are largely prevented, not cured:
- Harvest gently and avoid bruising, cutting, and skinning roots (see Harvesting).
- Cure properly β the 4β7 day warm, humid treatment that heals wounds (see Curing & Storage).
- Keep storage cool, dry, and ventilated; remove rotting roots promptly before they seed the pile.
Integrated disease management
Field guide: the clean-field program
- Start clean: certified or quality-declared vines; inspect every batch of cuttings before planting.
- Rogue early, rogue often: pull and destroy any stunted, mosaic, or wilting plant within the first 6 weeks β before vectors spread it.
- Control vectors: manage aphids and whiteflies (see Pests), especially near virus-endemic areas.
- Rotate: 2β3+ years away from sweet potato, and away from other solanaceous hosts for bacterial wilt.
- Harvest and store right: gentle digging, proper curing, sound storage β this stops the storage-rot half of the problem.
- Know your varieties: released varieties with SPVD or wilt resistance are your best single investment where diseases are endemic.
Pro tip: keep a βmother blockβ
Maintain a small, isolated block of your best vines β rogued hard, kept pest-free, and refreshed with certified material every few years. All your field planting material comes from this block. One healthy mother block is the cheapest disease insurance a sweet potato farm can buy.
