Sweet potato can survive drought β but surviving is not yielding. Water is the lever that decides whether roots bulk or stall, and the timing of water matters as much as the amount. The crop's real enemy is not dryness; it is waterlogging, which can undo everything.

How much water the crop uses
Over a 120-day season a good sweet potato crop transpires roughly 500β750 mm of water β similar to maize. Peak daily use during hot, vine-covering periods can reach 4β6 mm/day. The practical formula:
- Water need = rainfall + irrigation β losses. Where rain covers the need, no irrigation is required.
- Watch the soil, not the calendar: irrigate when the root zone dries out, not on a rigid schedule. A simple check β feel the soil at 10β15 cm depth a day after watering; if it is dry, water.
- Deep, infrequent beats shallow, frequent: occasional thorough watering encourages deep roots; frequent light sprinkling keeps roots shallow and the crop fragile.
Science deep dive: the two sensitive windows
Yield responds to water stress most strongly at two moments. Root initiation (roughly 6β10 weeks) sets the number of storage roots β stress here permanently cuts root count, and no later watering recovers it. Bulking (roughly 10β17 weeks) sets size β stress here shrinks each root. Stress in the middle (vine growth) matters least, because the crop simply slows canopy growth and recovers. Know which window you are in before deciding whether to scramble for water.
Drought and deficit responses
If water is short, you rarely have to choose between crop and no crop β sweet potato will survive and produce something. Manage the deficit:
- Protect establishment first: a little water at planting (and 7β10 days later) buys the whole stand; it is the highest-value water you will use.
- Defend bulking second: if water is limited during bulking, concentrate it on the younger, still-bulking fields rather than spreading it thin.

- Expect recovery, not replacement: the crop resumes growth after drought, but lost root size and number are not regained.

Watch out: waterlogging is worse than drought
Standing water for more than a day or two around young plants rots cuttings and roots; in wet soil, roots switch to oxygen-starved metabolism and either fail to bulk or rot outright. Pro tip: wet the ridge, not the furrow
With furrow irrigation, water moves sideways into the ridge where the roots live. Use short, frequent furrow runs rather than long, flooding ones β you wet the root zone without drowning it, and you avoid the crop's worst enemy, standing water.
Frequently asked questions
Is sweet potato drought-tolerant?
Yes β once established, it survives dry spells that kill maize or beans, and it can produce a partial crop on stored moisture. But drought tolerance is survival, not a free pass: stress during root initiation or bulking still cuts yield sharply.
How often should I irrigate?
There is no fixed answer β it depends on soil, heat, and stage. Check the soil at 10β15 cm: water when it is dry in the root zone, deeply rather than often. Early and late season need less; bulking needs the most.
Does overhead watering cause disease?
It can: wet foliage and humid canopy conditions favor leaf diseases and some rots. Drip or furrow keeps water off the leaves, which is one reason they are preferred where disease pressure is high.
Should I stop watering before harvest?
