Planting: Timing, Spacing & Methods
Getting establishment right
Planting is the cheapest place to gain yield: the right date, spacing, and planting method cost nothing and compound into everything that follows. A perfect stand of vigorous cuttings out-yields a late, crowded, or patchy one no matter what you do later.

When to plant
Two clocks matter: the soil's temperature and the moisture calendar. Plant when the soil is warm enough for rapid rooting and when moisture is reliable for the first 3β4 weeks β usually the start of the rains (see Climate & Growing Seasons).
- Too early: cold soil β slow rooting, rot, patchy stands. In temperate zones, wait until after the last frost and the soil has warmed above ~15β18 Β°C.
- Too late: the season shrinks, roots bulk less, and in monsoonal zones you plant into heavy rain or harvest into mud. Late planting is one of the most common causes of below-average yields.
- Staggered planting (2β3 batches, 2β3 weeks apart) spreads risk and harvest labor.
Field guide: planting the cutting
- Prepare the cutting β 25β40 cm, 3β7 nodes, fresh tip or firm mid-stem (see Propagation).
- Strip the lower leaves from the nodes that will be buried β buried leaves rot.
- Lay or insert it so 2β4 nodes are covered with 5β10 cm of soil; at least 1β2 nodes stay above ground with leaves exposed.
- Firm the soil around it β loose planting dries out; pressing the soil gently against the buried nodes improves rooting.
- Water if needed β a light irrigation right after planting greatly improves stand in dry soil.
Spacing and plant population
Spacing is a trade-off: closer plants give more roots but smaller ones; wider spacing gives bigger roots but fewer per hectare. Sweet potato compensates strongly, so exact numbers are less critical than consistent spacing. Working guidelines:

Ridge spacing of 0.9β1.2 m suits most soils and mechanized systems; on mounds, plant 2β4 cuttings per mound depending on mound size. Whatever the system, uniform spacing beats the βrightβ number applied unevenly.
Planting methods by system
- On ridges (most common): plant along the ridge top or slightly to one side. Ridge planting keeps roots in loose, drained soil and makes harvest easy.
- On mounds: plant cuttings into the mound sides or top; vines root into the mound, and mounds shed water in heavy-rain areas (see Soil).
- Flat beds (light sands only): plant directly into the prepared bed; fine where drainage is never a problem.
- Zero- or minimum-till: plant into residue or mulch where systems allow; keep the planting hole loose.

Depth and orientation
The buried part of the cutting is what roots from β so how you place it shapes the crop:

Depth should be 5β10 cm of soil over the buried nodes: too shallow dries out and washes loose; too deep rots and delays emergence.
Watch out: inverted cuttings
Cuttings are not polarity-neutral. Plant them the way they grew β the leaf end up. Inverted or sideways-planted cuttings root erratically, and βU-shapedβ planting with the middle buried and both ends up is a classic error that produces poor, lopsided stands.
The first weeks: establishment care
Establishment (roughly days 0β21) decides the stand, and the stand decides the yield:
- Water: keep the root zone moist. A light irrigation at planting and again 7β10 days later carries most crops through a dry spell.
- Weeds: the critical weed-free period starts now (see Weed Management) β the crop cannot compete in its first weeks.
- Gap-filling: check the stand at 10β14 days and replant misses promptly with fresh cuttings β a patchy stand never fully recovers.
- Pests: inspect for early damage; termites and cutworms strike young vines (see Pest Management).
Pro tip: plant after rain, not before
Where irrigation is unavailable, plant into moist soil β just after rain has wet the ridge, not just before heavy rain arrives. Moisture at planting roots the cutting; heavy rain right after planting can wash cuttings loose or waterlog them. Timing the planting to follow the first soaking rain is the classic dryland grower's move.
Frequently asked questions
How many plants per hectare?
Roughly 25,000β40,000, most commonly around 33,000 (30 cm in-row on 1 m ridges). Aim for the higher end under irrigation or when small, marketable roots are the goal.
Can I plant a whole vine?
You can lay a long vine flat in a shallow trench with nodes covered β an old method that works, especially in dry conditions, but it uses far more planting material per hectare than cuttings. Cuttings are the standard.
What happens if I plant too deep?
Deep-buried cuttings rot or emerge slowly, and roots form deep and uneven β harder to harvest. Aim for 5β10 cm of soil over the buried nodes, and no deeper than ~15 cm.
Should I plant on top of the ridge or in the furrow?
On or near the ridge top β that is where the loose, drained soil is. Furrow planting puts roots in the wettest, most compacted zone and invites rot in wet years.
