Designing the rotation
Growing sweet potato on the same land year after year is a slow-motion disaster: weevils, nematodes, and soil-borne diseases build up quietly until the crop suddenly βfailsβ for no visible reason. Rotation is the cheapest, most reliable pest and disease control in the book β and intercropping lets you earn from the same land while you do it.

Why rotate: what builds up on monoculture
Sweet potato's worst enemies are all soil- and debris-dwellers that accumulate when the crop returns to the same field:
- Weevils survive in leftover vines, roots, and volunteer plants; each sweet potato season multiplies them (see Pests).
- Root-knot nematodes build dense populations on sweet potato roots and stay in the soil between crops.
- Soil-borne diseases β fusarium, bacterial wilt (Ralstonia) β persist for years in soil and infected debris (see Diseases).
- Weeds that suit the crop's season and cultivation pattern thrive under repetition.
Rotation starves these populations: no host, no build-up. This is why the same variety that βran outβ on one farm thrives on a neighbor's fresh land.

The rotation doesn't need to be fancy: a 3β4 year cycle of sweet potato β legume/groundnut β maize or cereal β (optional cover crop) β sweet potato breaks the pest cycles, feeds the soil, and spreads labor and income.
Field guide: good and bad neighbors
Good predecessors and partners: maize, cereals, grasses, legumes (groundnut, cowpea, soybean), and root crops other than sweet potato. Legumes add nitrogen; grasses break nematode and weed cycles.
Poor predecessors: sweet potato itself (obviously), and β in bacterial-wilt areas β any solanaceous crop (Irish potato, tomato, pepper, eggplant), which host the same Ralstonia strain. Old pasture/grassland is fine for weeds but brings wireworm and grub pressure (see Pests).
Intercropping systems
Sweet potato is an excellent intercrop: it grows low and late-shading, leaving room for taller or earlier partners. Proven combinations:
- Sweet potato + maize: maize planted first, sweet potato between or after β maize shades early (cooling soil), sweet potato covers later; both yield well on the same land.
- Sweet potato + groundnut or cowpea: legumes fix nitrogen, give an early harvest, and their low growth complements the vines; the classic smallholder pairing.
- Sweet potato + relayed vegetables: after the sweet potato is well established, plant a short vegetable in the alleys; harvest it before the vines close.

Watch out: intercropping done wrong
Intercropping pays only when the partners do not compete at the same time for the same resources. Don't plant a tall, leafy, long-season crop (maize planted late, vigorous cassava) that will shade and strangle the sweet potato during bulking. Match growth habits and stagger planting so each crop gets its window. When in doubt, give the sweet potato the better light and soil.
Relay cropping and sequence
Relay cropping β planting the next crop before the current one finishes β squeezes extra production from the season. Workable sweet potato relays:
- Sweet potato β relayed legume: sow cowpea or groundnut into the aging vines 3β4 weeks before harvest; the legume takes over as the vines die back.
- Maize β relayed sweet potato: plant sweet potato under nearly mature maize; the maize is harvested, and the vines take the field.
- Sweet potato β rice/wheat (Asia): in irrigated systems, sweet potato fits between paddy rice crops β a classic Asian rotation that breaks rice monoculture.
Rotation as soil building
Rotation is not only pest control β it is the farmer's main soil-building tool:
- Legumes add nitrogen; grasses and residues return organic matter (see Organic).
- Different rooting depths leave the soil open: deep-rooted crops break compaction that shallow crops create.
- Weed suppression: changing crop and cultivation patterns starves the weeds suited to sweet potato's season.
Pro tip: think in fields, not years
Plan the rotation as field blocks, not abstract years: βField A gets sweet potato this season, Field B the legume, Field C the maize β and they rotate each season.β Mark it on a simple map or calendar. The discipline of writing it down is what actually keeps a 3-year gap honest when land is scarce and prices are tempting.
