One pest β the sweet potato weevil β causes more damage worldwide than all the others combined. The good news: weevil damage is largely preventable with hygiene and rotation, and the rest of the pest list is manageable once you know what you are looking at. This page is your IPM toolkit.

The sweet potato weevil
The weevil (Cylas formicarius) is a small, ant-like beetle that spends its whole life on sweet potato. Adults chew vines and leaves; larvae tunnel into stems and roots. The damage is two-fold:
- Direct loss: tunnelled roots are unmarketable and rot in storage.
- Chemical defense: the plant responds to weevil damage by producing bitter, toxic terpenoids β including ipomeamarone β that make even lightly damaged roots taste foul and unsafe to eat in quantity.
Because weevils breed inside vines and roots, they spread with planting material and survive in crop debris β which is why hygiene and rotation beat spraying. Science deep dive: why weevil roots taste awful
Weevil larvae wound root tissue, and the plant mounts a chemical defense: it synthesizes terpenoid phytoalexins, notably ipomeamarone. These compounds are bitter and hepatotoxic β the plant's way of making damaged roots unattractive to further feeding. The practical upshot: a root with even 5% weevil damage can taste intensely bitter and should not be eaten. This is also why weevil-infested fields cannot be βsalvagedβ β the damage is not just cosmetic.

The IPM toolkit for weevils
Field guide: the six-step weevil program
- Start clean: use certified or known-clean planting material; inspect cuttings for eggs and larvae before planting.
- Rotate: at least 2β3 years away from sweet potato on the same field (see Rotation).
- Ridge and keep soil cracked-free: mound soil over exposed roots so adults cannot reach them; repair cracks caused by drought or harvest.
- Hygiene: destroy crop debris, volunteer vines, and infested roots after harvest β the weevil's bridge to next season.
- Monitor: use pheromone traps (very effective for Cylas) and scout weekly; act when adults appear, not when roots are damaged.
- Chemical / biological only as backup: registered insecticides or the fungus Beauveria bassiana can suppress adults, but they never fix a hygiene failure.
Soil pests: wireworms, grubs, and nematodes

Foliage feeders
- Armyworms and cutworms: chew leaves and sever young stems. Usually sporadic β scout and treat only if damage is widespread; young plants matter most.
- Hornworms (hawk-moth caterpillars): large, dramatic defoliators, but rarely economic; hand-pick or tolerate on mature vines.
- Tortoise beetles: shot-hole leaf damage; mostly cosmetic on established crops.
- Aphids and whiteflies: minor direct damage, but they transmit viruses β control them where virus disease (SPVD) is present (see Diseases).
Pro tip: thresholds, not panic
Not every insect is a pest, and not every pest needs action. The IPM habit: know the pest, know the crop stage, and act only when damage passes a practical threshold. A few holes in mature vine leaves cost nothing; one weevil adult near planting time is a warning; fifty is a problem. Scouting weekly for five minutes beats spraying weekly all season.
Monitoring and decision rules
- Pheromone traps: for weevils, a few traps per field give an early warning that beats any scouting method. Rising catches = act before damage.
- Visual scouting: check undersides of leaves, vine bases, and soil cracks; look for wilting, yellowing, or holes.
- At harvest: record damage levels per field β that data tells you next season's rotation and planting decisions better than anything.
