Heat, light, and timing
Sweet potato is a tropical plant that behaves like a summer crop almost everywhere it is grown. Get the temperature and moisture windows right, and the crop is remarkably forgiving; get them wrong, and even good soil and good varieties underperform.

Temperature: a heat-loving crop
Sweet potato comes from the tropics and wants what the tropics have: warmth around the clock. Growth is fastest with air temperatures near 24–27 °C, and it largely stops below about 15 °C. The practical consequences:
- Planting window: wait until the soil has warmed (above ~15–18 °C). Planting into cold soil means slow, weak establishment and more losses to rot.
- Frost is fatal: a hard frost kills vines and damages roots left in the ground. Choose varieties and a calendar that fit inside the frost-free period.
- Hot is okay: the crop thrives through 30 °C+ heat — one reason it out-yields maize in hot, marginal areas.
Watch out: cold soil at planting
In temperate and highland areas the biggest single mistake is planting too early. Cuttings sit in cold soil, roots form slowly, and diseases such as fusarium rot take hold. A crop planted two weeks later into warm soil will often overtake one planted early.
Rainfall and water
Sweet potato is genuinely drought-tolerant once established — its deep, fibrous root system and waxy leaves let it ride out dry spells that would finish maize or beans. But water still sets the yield ceiling:
- Establishment (0–3 weeks): the only stage where the plant is fragile. Cuttings need moisture to root; a dry start means a patchy stand.
- Bulking (10–17 weeks): water stress during root bulking cuts root size directly. A mid-season dry spell at this stage costs more than one at any other time.
- Total needs: roughly 500–750 mm over the season. Well-distributed rain of 750–1,000 mm is ideal; more than that (or poorly drained soil) invites waterlogging.
Timing matters more than totals. The classic failure pattern in monsoonal climates is planting just before heavy rain: waterlogged roots, rotted cuttings, and vines that grow leaves instead of roots. Match planting to the start of reliable moisture, not the peak of the wet season. Day length and photoperiod
Unlike many staples, sweet potato is largely day-neutral: it will form roots across a wide range of day lengths, which is why it grows from the equator to 40°+ latitude. Photoperiod does matter in two places:
- Flowering: many varieties flower only under specific day-length and temperature combinations (often short days and cooler nights). This matters to breeders, rarely to farmers — the crop is planted from cuttings, not seed.
- Maturity timing: in the tropics, day length barely changes, so crop timing is driven by rainfall, not light. In temperate zones, the season is driven by temperature and frost dates instead.
Science deep dive: why it survives drought
Sweet potato combines several drought adaptations: a deep and wide fibrous root system, thick cuticle and waxy leaves that cut transpiration, the ability to roll leaves and slow growth under stress, and a habit of surviving dry spells by pausing — then resuming root bulking when rain returns. What it cannot do is grow a good crop on stored moisture alone: the yield loss from a mid-bulking drought is permanent, not recovered later.

Pro tip: stagger plantings
Plant the same variety in 2–3 batches two to three weeks apart. You smooth out risk (a bad storm hits one batch, not all), spread your weeding and harvest workload, and keep fresh roots flowing to market over more weeks — which usually means a better average price (see Economics).
Altitude
Sweet potato grows from sea level to more than 2,000 m in the tropics. The rule of thumb is that every ~150–200 m of altitude drops average temperature by about 1 °C, so highland sites behave like cooler, shorter seasons: choose earlier varieties, plant after the soil warms, and expect slower bulking. In the East African highlands, sweet potato is a crucial food-security crop precisely because it grows where maize struggles — but only if the calendar respects the cooler conditions.

How much rain is too much?
Continuous heavy rain on poorly drained soil is the danger: waterlogging rots cuttings, stunts roots, and invites disease. On well-drained ridges, even 1,200+ mm can work if it is not concentrated in the first weeks.
Is sweet potato affected by day length?
